People just starting out in modeling make the mistake of having a few photos taken by a friend or a friend who considers themselves photographers.  This is ok to get on a modeling site because they usually require an avatar and a few photos.  However, if you are serious about doing modeling you really need to have the correct series of photographs taken depending on the type of modeling or performance art that you do. 

Without good photos that show you in the right light and the right poses, you will be limiting yourself.

If you are a model and you want to do lifestyle or fit modeling, the lighting and styling will be different than for a corporate portrait.  Portfolios are an asset to those doing modeling, glamour, catalog work, dancers, boudoir and wearable art.

For a model portfolio you will either need to specialize or do a wide variety of modeling.  When you look at the types of modeling that many models list on the various sites, the list covers almost everything possible.  You need to ask yourself if this is what you want to do, or do you want to focus.  Many models do mostly clothing, for example for catalogs or fashion designers.  Others prefer artistic vintage or figure work.  Others model jewelry.  Still others model only their hands or legs, or shoes.
